Can Tofu Really Replace Meat?
The versatile protein is your answer to a more healthful dinner option.

Tofu might be the most versatile ingredient in existence. It takes on any flavor you pair with it, it is a complete protein, and it is extremely low in calories. This allows it to fit into virtually any diet unless you are allergic to soy.
Tofu contains all nine essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein. This means you can fully substitute tofu for meat in any dish and still get your daily protein intake. In addition to being high in protein, tofu also contains very low fat and carbohydrates and a significant amount of manganese, selenium, and phosphorate. Manganese and phosphorus assists in bone formation and blood clotting, while also helping to metabolize amino acids. Selenium helps to boost your immune system and thyroid function. On top of all this, a single serving only contains 70 calories!
Tofu’s nutrition isn’t the only reason to include it in your weekly meal planning. Its versatility comes from its absorbent nature. Marinate tofu in anything and it will quickly take on the flavor of the marinade. This is how tofu can fit into barbecue, stir fry, and Mexican food. Another trick is if tofu is blended, it can serve as the binding agent in baked goods, such as cakes and brownies, or can be turned into a custard for banana “cream” pie or pumpkin pie.
When considering all of these benefits, it’s hard to think of a better ingredient for those on a diet. It has all the benefits of meat without any of the negative features. It is also significantly less expensive. If you are new to trying tofu, I suggest buying a block, marinating it in your favorite marinade, and cook it like a chicken breast: high heat sear until it has browned. Dice it and add it to your usual side dishes. While it may not be a perfect substitute, this should let you see how versatile of a protein tofu really is.
